Learning to network

Quality over quantity

Filed under: Manage my network — Arthur M. Gallagher @ 12:30 pm

In the past week I have come across many “power networkers” who have 1,000s of first degree connections. However, as networking is secondary to my day job as an IS Automation Architect (this is my most recent choice of market positioning 😉 ), I am specifically choosing to aim for connecting with quality relationships, rather than a high number of links.

I think that I would categorise my connections in the following three ways for now:

  • (ex-)colleagues
  • personal friends
  • mentors

I am not sure I have given the last one the right name, and I do not yet have a clear definition for it, but I feel I will benefit greatly from relationships with positive, forward looking people who are prepared to take time to teach me, and in return to learn things for themselves. I have already made my first such connection with Markus (who is kindly trying to guide me towards upgrading myself to be a Web 2.0 user), and I have another couple of folk in mind.
